Chinese immigrants played a crucial role in shaping California's wine industry. Between the years of 1870 and 1900, Chinese immigrants were the primary workforce in the vineyards and wine country of Napa Valley. They cleared land, cultivated vineyards, dug wine cellars, and built bridges and roads. Despite discrimination, they contributed labor and expertise to vineyard work and their contributions were indispensable to the success of California's wineries.

    About "The Chinese Lady"

inspired by the true story of Afong Moy’s life, "The Chinese Lady" is a dark, poetic, yet whimsical portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

Afong Moy is fourteen years old when she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou Province in 1834. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she has been put on display for the American public as “The Chinese Lady.” For the next half-century, she performs for curious white people, showing them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. Soon her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity.

This is an open event for the friends and family of Paul Sakamoto, who passed away on October 27, 2023. The Celebration of Life event will be held outdoors in the historic Heinlenville Park, located in San Jose Japantown.

Paul was the first Asian American superintendent of schools (on the Mainland) and mentor to many civic leaders. Paul was a founding member of Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI), who worked on the first AAPI oral history event in the Valley, "Why America" in 1976, and other community projects over the years. Paul Sakamoto was "a man for all seasons" who donated the many cherry trees flowering at Hakone Gardens today.

It is very appropriate that Paul's celebration of life will be at Heinlenville Park. He was born nearby at a boarding house on 5th and Jackson Streets. This event is planned and arranged by a committee from Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj), who knew Paul well from different aspects of his career.

An RSVP is not required to attend, but you are encouraged to RSVP, either to psakamotoclc@gmail.com or by filling out the RSVP form.

The Santa Clara City Library (SCCL) will present an Author Talk with William Gee Wong on May 11, 2024 at 1:00 pm. At this event, journalist and Oakland native William “Bill” Gee Wong will share insights from his newly published book Sons of Chinatown: A Memoir Rooted in China and America.

Wong's father entered the U.S. legally as the “son of a native,” despite having partially false papers. Sons of Chinatown is Wong’s evocative dual memoir of his and his father’s parallel experiences in America during the Chinese exclusion era and in the subsequent decades.

Wong's journalism work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Oakland Tribune, and many others. As a journalist, Wong chronicled Asian American experiences while honoring Chinese American history and identity while facing discrimination.
