November 2024 Newsletter

President's Message

Hi,

GREAT NEWS! I have been hoping, for many years, to be able to announce that CHCP is now a member of NARM (North American Reciprocal Museums).

Starting this coming year, 2025 Patron level members can visit 1400 Museums FREE! Many of these museums are nearby. For example, you have the opportunity to visit over 60 NARM museums located in the Bay Area, including the DeYoung, Legion of Honor, CHSA and the Asian Art Museums.

I have been a big fan of NARM...and have been a member for 12 years. When I was still traveling for work and also for my National Engineering Fraternity, I used to visit 20 to 30 museums annually.

PLUS we still have the 500 ROAM Museums (Reciprocal Organization of Associated Museums).

More good news! Renew or join at the Patron level NOW and you can start using your 2025 CHCP membership card right away.

During the upcoming Thanksgiving and year end Holidays you can check out interesting and exciting museums wherever you are. Also, we hope to schedule group visits to NARM and ROAM museums in 2025.

Even more good news, membership still includes our annual complimentary membership dinner in January...and our Patron Members get more benefits (the addition of NARM) at no additional cost.

To renew your membership or upgrade to Patron level:

1. Click here to login.

2. Click on your name in the top right > View Profile

3. Select "Renew to January 1, 2026." If upgrading your membership level, click on the "Change" button instead (see image below for reference).

*Note we have eliminated all credit card fees for all online payments.

If you do not wish to renew online, you can also send in a check.

BACGG Chinese Surname Search Symposium: Chan Family Case Study

When: December 03, 2024 from 10am-1:45pm

Where: Oakland Family Search Center (Downstairs Meeting Room) & Online (via Zoom)

A Chinese surname is not just a name. It comes with thousands of years of history, dreams and desires. This Bay Area Chinese Genealogy Group (BACGG) four-hour symposium with multiple speakers, will teach you how to find your surname history, research your ancestors, and even help you find your village in China. Plus, use Chinese Association resources right here in the Bay Area to potentially break through genealogical barriers. There is also a premier of a short movie on the history of the Chan family, and tutorial on how it was produced so you may create the same. No matter what surname you have, you will learn from the “Chan template” of how to weave your surname history into your own.

CHCP members George Chin and Ron Chan, with Huihan Lie and Dr. Kenneth Chan will be speaking.

Please take advantage of your trip to the Oakland Family Search Center, as after this session, there are docents that can assist with online research, and/or full (and free!) use of a comprehensive digital lab for scanning photos, slides, negatives and video.

11/02/24 CHCP Veggielution Farm Tour

By Sue Gong Lee, CHCP Member

When CHCP offered a tour of Veggielution which is located in Emma Prusch Farm Park, I jumped at the chance to visit it. I was not aware of this organization and was surprised at what a hidden gem I discovered. Veggielution is a non-profit organization that operates a 2-acre community farm within Emma Prusch Farm Park. Their mission is to create a more sustainable food system and to promote healthy eating habits by providing access to fresh, locally grown produce and by offering educational programs and workshops.

Veggielution has a permanent exhibit called Growing AgriCultural Roots that tells the significant contributions made by Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino immigrants in the agricultural development of Santa Clara Valley during the 1880s through the 1960s. It was really wonderful to see and read the historical signs which has pictures or quotes from residents.
