Student Docent Cultural Ambassador Program (SDCAP)

CHCP is looking for high school and college student volunteers who are interested in becoming Student Docent ‘Cultural Ambassadors’ for CHCP events/activities as well as for its signature Chinese American Historical Museum.

An SDCAP Orientation / Training class is usually held in October each year. For 2024-2025, the Orientation class is scheduled for October 12, 2024. High school and college students who have gone through the Orientation / Training class will receive many community service opportunities. One required service will be as a student docent in the Chinese American Historical Museum during a minimum of 2 museum openings of their choice, totaling 10 hours. Student volunteers can also earn hours by working any weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) CHCP special event or activity at History Park or another site (e.g. Children’s Discovery Museum or Westfield Valley Fair Mall to celebrate Lunar New Year). In May, a Certificate of Completion will be given to students who complete 20+ hours of community service.

Students will improve their self-confidence and speaking skills as they interact with and guide visitors through the museum and enrich their knowledge of Chinese history and culture at various CHCP historical and/or cultural  events. There are also opportunities for Parent Team Volunteers where at least one parent participates with his/her teen, providing a fulfilling experience for both teen and parent(s).

In 2003, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity.  In July 2019, CHCP became a certifying organization to track and certify service hours earning a PVSA Award within a 12-month period. For more details, access PVSA Information and CHCP Community Service Verification Form here (both in PDF format).
