Almaden Quicksilver was the site of one of the largest quicksilver (mercury) mines in the world starting in 1847. There was a small community of Chinese laborers who lived and worked around the mines in the 1800's. They brought many of their traditions to the mining camps. Additionally many flasks of mercury were shipped from New Almaden to China for the production of red vermillion dye. As a result of a trade deal during that time a ting pavilion was sent to the mine manager. See displays and photos of the Ting at the Mining Museum.
