Symphony SJ Performance: The Yellow River Cantata

  • August 16, 2025
  • 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
  • SJ Center for Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd, San Jose, CA 95113

The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of three momentous events: the end of World War II, the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese War, and the founding of the United Nations. These milestones remind us of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring pursuit of peace.

To commemorate these historic events, 70 musicians from Symphony San Jose, more than 20 Chinese-American Organizations, and 170 chorus members proudly present a landmark LIVE performance of The Yellow River Cantata, composed by Xian Xinghai in 1939.

Composer Xian Xinghai blended Western classical music forms (such as cantata and symphony) with traditional Chinese folk melodies and instruments (including pipa and sanxian.)

The Yellow River Cantata is a moving tribute to the resilience of a people and the power of music to uplift and unite. This performance will serve as both a solemn memorial to the past and a powerful call for peace in our shared future.
