As many of you may have heard, the federal government is trying to close and move the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) facilities at San Francisco (in San Bruno) and Chicago. Save Our National Archives (SONA) has been working to lobby our Congressional Representatives to stop this closure. NARA contains hundreds of thousands of files related to immigration, military, and citizenship history, documenting experiences under Chinese Exclusion, Japanese American internment, Filipino American repatriation, Native indigenous and Hawaiian sovereignty, as WWI & WWII service members, War Brides, and Congressional Gold Medal recipients, all histories significant to the Western Region and Pacific Island regions.
Congressman Kevin Mullin of California's 15th District (home to the National Archives at San Francisco or NARA-SF) and his colleagues will be holding a Press Conference on Monday, August 24 at 10:00 am, outside the SF archives facility at the Leo J. Ryan Memorial Federal Building, 1000 Commodore Drive, San Bruno. He will announce actions to stop the closure of NARA-SF.
Rep. Mullin will share information about a bipartisan, bicameral group of 37 lawmakers working to defend the local facility, as well as a new federal bill introduced to stop the closure of any national archive facility without Congressional approval.
The SONA team will be there and are asking as many supporters as possible to attend the press conference. Your presence will support the call for decisive action to keep the NARA-SF and NARA-Chicago facilities open and for historical records to remain available to the public!
