    • Iris Chang Park, 688-694 Epic Way, San Jose, CA

CHCP invites you to visit Iris Chang Park to celebrate Women's History Month and to honor Iris Chang. Iris Chang was a Chinese American journalist, author of historical books, and political activist. She is best known for her best-selling 1997 account of the Nanking Massacre, The Rape of Nanking, and in 2003, The Chinese in America: A Narrative History.

The 2.6-acre park near Montague Expressway and Seely Avenue was inaugurated in 2019 to honor Iris. The park's six installations were very thoughtfully researched and beautifully created to carry on Iris' messages of personal activism for democracy and freedom for all. Through brief discussions at several of the park's installations having quotes from Iris, we will be able to know a little more of her perspective of life and what one’s role might be to improve world and community relationships.

Next we will clean and beautify the park to honor Iris, while also celebrating Women's History Month (March), Earth Day (April 22), and AAPI month (May). Some yard/landscape maintenance tools will be available, but best if you could bring your own broom, greenery disposal bags, small clippers, rake, sunhat, kneeling pads, gardening gloves, etc.

This is a free event with refreshments served after the clean-up session.

Please RSVP to CHCP Director Brenda Hee Wong at brenda.wong@chcp.org or 408-228-2424.

    • 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
    • California Museum, 1020 O St, Sacramento, CA 95814

Don't miss your chance to attend the premiere of award-winning filmmaker Min Zhou's documentary “Voices: Chinese Women of the Delta,” presented by the Locke Foundation - Oral History Project (LF-OHP) and Locke Prior Residents and Descendants Association (LockePRDA), and hosted by the California Museum as part of its Women's History Month programming.

“Voices: Chinese Women of the Delta” explores the sacrifices and contributions of women immigrants from China, as told by their descendants. The film examines how marginalized and discriminated against in the wider society, Chinese women suffered further repression within the male-dominated Chinese culture. Invisible and voiceless, their own community gave them little consolation or support in a country that viewed them as aliens and granted them few rights or standing. Yet the women's previously untold stories reveal an indomitable resilience that shaped families, communities, and the course of California history.

CLICK HERE to view a preview of the film.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and documentary participants.

Light refreshments will be served to ticketed guests. No food or drink is allowed in the auditorium.

$30.00 advance tickets also provide entry to all current California Museum exhibits, including "Gold Mountain: Chinese Californian Stories."

Join the Committee of 100 and The Asian American Education Project for a three-part series that examines the rich contributions of Chinese Americans to U.S. society, both historically and in the present day. The content was sourced from Committee of 100’s report “From Foundations to Frontiers: Chinese American Contributions to the Fabric of America.”

Specifically designed for Grades 6-9 educators and open to everyone, the series addresses three main topics: (1) the impact of the Perpetual Foreigner Stereotype on Chinese Americans, (2) Chinese American contributions in food, arts, and film, and (3) Chinese American contributions in business, science, and technology.

    Event Highlights:

    • Gain Tools and Resources: Educators will be equipped with strategies and free lessons.
    • Learn All Year: These three 1-hour workshops are being offered for free and are spread throughout the school year.
    • Earn Credits: Attendees will earn New York City Department of Education CTLE credits through The Asian American Education Project.

Workshop III: Chinese American Excellence in Business & STEM
    Thursday, March 27, 2025
    1:00 - 2:00 PM PT (4:00 - 5:00 PM ET)
    4:00 - 5:00 PM PT (7:00 - 8:00 PM ET)

This workshop will be offered twice on Thursday, March 27 to accommodate educators in different time zones. Each session will present the same content.

Chinese Americans have found success in the fields of business and entrepreneurship and science and technology. Their ability to thrive in these industries has been impacted by immigration policy at different moments in American history, yet Chinese Americans have found ways to adapt and survive. In this workshop, participants will learn about early Chinese American contributions to business and STEM, and how they made progress in later decades up to the present. Participants will gain classroom resources for teaching these contributions in the classroom.

Ching Ming, Grave Sweeping Day, is a traditional Chinese celebration honoring ancestors. This custom is observed as a traditional and cultural ritual rather than a religious practice.

Ching Ming unfolds in a picnic-like atmosphere and is observed as a time for happy communion with ancestors rather than a somber occasion. On this day, families visit the cemeteries of their ancestors to pay their respects with offerings of flowers, incense, imitation paper money, and food. They also sweep and clean the gravesite.

For more details: Visit our Ching Ming page (part of our Virtual Library).
